New approach has Mathis walking more

Leading up to the season a lot was made of Tanner Mathis’ expanded frame and how trading in his slap-like swing for a more emphatic one might lead to more extra base hits.

What was somehow left out of the conversation was how the junior’s altered approach at the plate might lead to more walks.

After walking twice on Saturday and three more times on Sunday, Mathis has now jogged to first base six times in six games.
The junior left fielder walked 15 times in each of the previous two seasons. (February 27, 2012, Page 1B)
