New Albany edges Lady ‘Dores

An early lead didn’t hold for the Lafayette Lady Commodores lost 49-47 to New Albany in the Division 2-4A Tournament Friday. Mykira Buford and Mariah Buford each scored 10 points in the loss. Mariah Hariston had nine points, while Janae Westbrook scored eight. Mariah Buford also had seven steals, while Mykira Buford finished with 10 assists.

LHS coach Amy Sutton said the loss was the toughest of the season because her team led the first three quarters and were outscored 22-9 in the fourth.

“At this point we should know how to finish a game and we didn’t do it,” Sutton said. “We weren’t aggressive going to the basket, we were missing easy shots and on the opposite side of the ball, we were very lax. Hopefully the loss hurt enough to inspire courageousness in the Lady Commodores. We have to get back to doing what do best, playing hard for four quarters with no time off.”

Lafayette will return to action tonight at Leake Central for the first round of the MHSAA’s Class 4A playoffs. The winner will advance to the 4A North Half Tournament, while the loser’s season comes to an end. (February 13, 2012, Page 2B)
