Late run lifts Callaway past Oxford

JACKSON — A series of runs decided Tuesday night’s elimination game of the Class 5A North Half state tournament between the Oxford Chargers and Callaway in the CHS gym.

Unfortunately for Oxford, the last run of the night was produced by Callaway and standout guard Malik Newman, who scored 31 points in a 65-59 win that sent Callaway on to play Canton on Friday.

OHS coach Drew Tyler was very pleased with the way his team competed on a foreign court in front of a rowdy crowd that only got more loud and animated as the game wore on. Unlike in last Friday night’s loss to West Point in the Division 2-5A Tournament final were mistakes and lack of execution cost OHS a win, the Chargers executed Tyler’s plan to near perfection.

Outside of a couple of mistakes, the Chargers (21-10 overall) outplayed Callaway (20-6) for a good portion of the game. (February 15, 2012, Page 6)
