Lady ‘Dores take on Forrest County tonight

A return to the “Big House” is on the menu tonight for the Lafayette Lady Commodores. LHS advanced to MHSAA’s Class 4A state semifinals tonight by winning two of three games played in the North Half tournament in Pontotoc on Feb. 16-18.

LHS, which also advanced to the semifinals in 2010, will now meet 4A South Half champion Forrest County AHS (28-0 overall) tonight in the Mississippi Coliseum in Jackson. Tipoff is set for 6:30 p.m. The winner of tonight’s game will play either Pontotoc, the North Half champion, or Bay High in the title game on Friday at 6:30 p.m.

Forrest County enters tonight’s game averaging 74 points per game. The Lady Aggies are led by the sister duo of Samantha and Kimberly Clemts, who combined to average 33 points per game.

LHS enters tonight’s game averaging 52.1 points and are also led by a pair of sisters in Mykira and Mariah Buford. The duo averages half of the Lady Commodores’ point total each game with Mykira leading 13.7 points per game average.

The undefeated Oxford Lady Chargers are also making the trip south to Jackson. OHS (31-0) takes on Wayne County (20-12) in the 5A semifinals Tuesday at 1 p.m. The winner will then take on Center Hill (26-6) or South Jones (27-7) in the title game on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Oxford, whose last trip to Jackson was 2005, is led by guard Erika Sisk, who is averaging 22.7 points per game. Oxford as a team is averaging 78.1 points per game and 23.1 steals per contest.

Wayne County, who won the 2010 5A title, is led by Jaleshia Jones’ 13.1 points per game average. The Lady War Eagles average 52 points per contest. (February 27, 2012, Page 1B)
