Lady ‘Dores defeated by Lady Vikings in semifinals

NEW ALBANY — A chance for the Lafayette Lady Commodores basketball team to claim a second consecutive district tournament championship was sunk Thursday night by the North Pontotoc Lady Vikings.

A strong effort late in the game was not enough to overcome a sluggish start for the Lady ‘Dores at the New Albany Middle School Gym, as Lafayette fell 62-48 to the Lady Vikings in the semifinals of the Division 2-4A Tournament.

With the loss, Lafayette (12-12 overall) now has to play New Albany at 4 today, and will be on the road for the first round of the MHSAA Class 4A playoffs against the No. 1 or 2 seed from Region 4.

The Lady ‘Dores trailed by as many as 19 points in the early part of the third quarter, but was able to chip away late in the game, cutting the lead to six (48-42) with 5:26 to play in the fourth quarter — the closest it would get the rest of the contest, as the Lady Vikings went on a 14-6 run to close the game. (February 10, 2012, Page 7A)
