Three vie for Ward 6 seat

By 5 p.m. Wednesday, three Oxford Ward 6 residents had qualified to ask their neighbors to vote them onto the Oxford Board of Aldermen. Liz Barrett threw her name into the hat Tuesday and will appear on the Feb. 14 special election ballot against Jason Bailey and Katie Morrison.

        • Pauline “Polly” Story Gillock — 97, died Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2012, at Wesley Meadows in Hernando. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Parkway Baptist Church in Hernando. Burial will follow at 2 p.m. at Barbee Cemetery in Lula. Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. at Parkway Baptist Church. National Funeral Home in Clarksdale are in charge of the arrangements.
        • W. Allen Pepper Jr. — 70, died Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2012. Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church in Cleveland. Visitation will be held from noon until 2 p.m. Saturday in the fellowship hall of the First Baptist Church in Cleveland. Ray Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
        • Georgia Mae Smith — 72, died Saturday, Jan. 21, 2012, at Graceland Care Center in Oxford. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at New Hope MB Church. Burial will follow in Oxford Memorial Cemetery. Kenneth I. Roberson Funeral Home of Pontotoc is in charge of the arrangements.

            Colston, Massengill sign with NWCC

            Tuesday was a proud day for Lafayette girls soccer coach Melinda Scruggs.

            At approximately 2 p.m., Scruggs watched as two of her seniors, Andrea Colston and Karly Massengill, make sure their soccer careers would extend past William L. Buford Stadium by signing to play for Northwest Mississippi Community College. (more…) (January 26, 2012, Page 7)

              Oxford sweeps Saltillo in hoops action

              Oxford’s varsity basketball teams earned two region wins over Saltillo on Tuesday night. The Lady Chargers remained undefeated and grabbed a share of the regular season region title with a 91-49 win over the Lady Tigers. Oxford’s boys improved to 17-7 overall and 4-1 in the region thanks to a 67-48 win. Erika Sisk led the Lady Chargers with a 27 points and eight steals. (more…) (January 26, 2012, Page 7)
