The Lafayette hoops squads split with North Pontotoc on the road Tuesday. The Lady Commodores earned a 69-59 victory, while the boys lost 80-68.
“We knew going into the game that we were undersized, so the effectiveness of our defense had to be the key,” LHS girls coach Amy Sutton said. “We had two players with double-doubles simply because they were committed to the rebound. This is a huge win for us.”
Mykria Buford led the LHS girls (8-6 overall, 1-0 2-4A) with 24 points, while Mariah Buford had 21 points and 13 rebounds, and Salena Buck had 10 points and a team-high 15 rebounds. Tiffany Ragsdale and Mariah Hairston chipped in eight and six points respectively.
The LHS boys (1-8, 0-1) were led in scoring by Brandon Mack (22), DeBrico Burgess (21) and Joshua Barry (10).
Lafayette returns to the court on Friday, hosting Senatobia. Junior varsity action begins at 4 p.m. (January 11, 2012, Page 7)
