Lafayette’s football players dominated the Region 2-4A team, which was voted on and released Thursday by the region’s coaches. Quarterback Jeremy Liggins was named Player of the Year. Running back Demarkous Dennis was named Offensive Player of the Year and linebacker Jamel Dennis was named Defensive Player of the Year.
A total of 24 LHS players were named to the team, with 15 of those players being named to the first team. Joining Liggins and the Dennis brothers on the first team were: center Vic Rather, guard Mario Toles, tackle D’Andre Greer, tight end Dylan Gossett, kicker Tyler Jackson, cornerback Brandon Mack, strong safety Tevin Buford, inside linebacker Alec Michael, outside linebacker Joshua Barry, defensive end Keeyon Tyson, defensive end Cortez Coleman and defensive tackle D.Q. Reynolds.
Running back D.K. Buford, wide receiver Jeremiah Jones, guard Morgan Klepzig, tackle Trae Williams and long snapper Gordon Liles were named to the second team on offense
Free safety Colby Terrell was named to the second team on defense. Linebacker Kalen Coleman, wide receiver DeBrico Burgess and tight end Elliot Markuson were all named as honorable mentions.
Lafayette finished the 2011 season with a 16-0 record and second straight Class 4A state championship. (January 6, 2012, Page 6A)
