Lafayette’s quest to win a Class II state title in girls powerlifting got off to a great start Saturday with a first-place finish in the Pontotoc Invitational hosted by Pontotc. The Lady Commodores scored 54 points thanks to five first-place finishes, three second-place finishes and one third-place finish.
Nettleton finished second in the meet followed by New Albany in third and Pontotoc in fourth.
First-place finishers for Lafayette were Megan Wootten in the 97-pound class, Jazmine Jones (165), Kelsey Kesler (181), Sparkle Duncan (198) and Ashley Carter (220).
Wootten totaled 400 pounds, Jones totaled 655, Kesler recorded a 600, Duncan, an eighth-grader, totaled 640, while Carter finished with 700.
Cate Clay (97), Meg Norphlet (105) and Meghan Sharp (165) all finished in second place. Clay finished with a 395, Norphlet a 480 and Sharp had a 615.
Corey Hollis finished third in the 148 division with a 615. Sain Hairston was fourth in the 123 class with a 585, while Jada McIntosh was fifth in the 123 division. Lafayette will return to action Jan. 30 at Calhoun City. (January 23, 2012, Page 3B)
