Oxford’s girls soccer team earned two shutouts over West Point and New Hope on Saturday.
The 8-0 win over the Green Wave was a district win for the Lady Chargers, who were coming off a 3-1 win over Horn Lake on Thursday. Oxford then defeated New Hope 1-0 Saturday afternoon to cap a successful road swing and improve to 6-6 overall. Zoe Scruggs led Oxford with two first-half goals against West Point. Meredith Sanford, Ali Collier and Sally Rychlak all scored a goal in the first half. Rychlak added a second goal in the second half, while Beaty McKnight gave herself a birthday present with a made goal.
Emily Meadows and Emily Morgan split time in goal with Morgan recording two saves. In the win over New Hope, Maggie Mitchell scored the game-winning goal on an assist from Sanford. Both teams were tied 0-0 in the first half despite Oxford having nine shots on goal. Meadows had seven saves in the victory, while Chase Caldwell and Ally McGee were credited with great defensive efforts.
Both OHS varsity teams return to action Tuesday at home against West Point. The game will be Senior Night for the Lady Chargers. (January 9, 2012, Page 7)
