Kennedy dismisses Nelson, Jones

Ole Miss’ Southeastern Conference opener in men’s basketball at LSU on Saturday became a more daunting task after coach Andy Kennedy dismissed leading scorer Dundrecous Nelson and reserve Jamal Jones from the team Thursday for a violation of team rules.

Nelson, a sophomore guard from Jackson, was leading a team that has been struggling to score with 11.6 points per game.

Nelson’s release stems directly from his arrest on a misdemeanor charge of possession of paraphernalia early Wednesday morning, approximately four hours after the Rebels’ 50-48 win over SMU at C.M. “Tad” Smith Coliseum.

Nelson was taken into custody by an Oxford police officer at his residence and was then booked into the Lafayette County Detention Center. Nelson was later released from jail on a $264 bond and is scheduled to appear in Oxford Municipal Court on Jan. 25 to deal with the charge. (January 6, 2012, Page 6A)
