Singletary has rep as tenacious defender

As head coach Renee Ladner said earlier this week, the Lady Rebels know who they have at point guard and center.

Sophomore Valencia McFarland and senior Nikki Byrd are stalwarts that won’t change throughout the season.

The other three positions, however, have been rather fluid through the first six games.

Though senior LaTosha Laws and junior Maggie McFerrin have started in six and five games, respectively, Ladner has consistently rotated other players at the guard spots.

One player that has consistently been in the mix and is currently fourth on the team in minutes-per-game is freshman Amber Singletary.

The Baltimore native was a late addition to Ole Miss’ most recent-signing class but quickly caught Ladner’s attention once she arrived in Oxford.

Asked if Singletary’s development is on track, Ladner admitted she wasn’t quite sure what to expect from the freshman, who was rated by ESPN’s recruiting service as the 53rd-best guard in the 2011 class. (December 2, 2011, Page 7A)
