Snowfall highlights first quarter of 2011

Lots of projects – Olin Corp.’s Centerfire plant, the new Oxford High School and talks about the sale of the hospital – got rolling in the first quarter of 2011, but there was one ball that really got rolling as more than a foot of snow fell in two separate storms the first two months of the year.   • Richie Turnipseed Ard — 65, died Saturday, Dec. 24, 2011, at her home in Oxford. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Waller Funeral Home in Oxford. Burial will follow in Oxford Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 this evening at the funeral home.
  • George Thomas Lovelady — 75, died Saturday, Dec. 24, 2011, at his residence in Oxford. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Waller Funeral Home in Oxford. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in Oxford Memorial Cemetery in Oxford.
  • Earnest O’Neil Moore Jr. — 60, died Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2011, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi in Oxford. Services were held this morning at Jeffrie Chapel M.B. Church in Abbeville. Burial followed in Owens Cemetery in Abbeville. Hodges-Freeman Funeral Home in Oxford was in charge of arrangements.
  • Wallace Keith Oakes — 39, died Friday, Dec. 23, 2011, at The Med in Memphis. Services will be held at 2 this afternoon in the Coleman Funeral Home Chapel in Oxford. Burial will follow in the Abbeville Cemetery in Abbeville. Visitation will be held for two hours prior to the service at the funeral home.
  • Francis M. “Frank” Rhodes — 77, died Saturday, Dec. 24, 2011, at the V.A. Medical Center. Services will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Millington Chapel of the Munford Funeral Home in Millington. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
  • Samuel Wayne Waller Jr. — 67, died Thursday, Dec. 22, 2011, at his home in Oxford. Services were held this morning at Clear Creek Baptist Church. Burial followed in Clear Creek Cemetery. Waller Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Attorney takes on new career: author

Lauren Alexander was an attorney in Oxford for many years before turning her sights on writing. She recently released two books and will speak about them at the Lafayette County and Oxford Public Library on Jan. 26. (December 27, 2011, Page 7)

  • William “Bill” L. Watt — 75, died Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2011, at his residence in Batesville. Services will be held at 4 this afternoon at the First United Methodist Church in Batesville. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Garden of Memories located at Coleman Funeral Home in Oxford. Visitation will be held for two hours prior to the service at the church.
  • Samuel Wayne “Sam” Waller Jr. — 66, died Thursday at his home in Oxford. Arrangements incomplete with Waller Funeral Home of Oxford.
