Oxford’s girls soccer team earned its first win of the season over the weekend with a 2-1 triumph over Gautier. Oxford (1-5 overall) lost 2-0 to Warren Central and 2-1 to Northwest Rankin in the other two games. Oxford was without three senior starters — Mary Helen Rychlak, Meredith Sanford and Maia Cotelo — during Friday night’s match against Warren Central.
OHS coach Laura Flint played six middle school players in their place and she said they played extremely hard.
She credited the play of eighth-grader Michelle Reid, who scored the first goal of the first half in the win over Gautier, while fellow eighth-grader Zoe Scruggs scored the second goal. Eighth grader Sarah Nash was also credited with playing well in the win over Gautier. Senior Chase Caldwell was credited with being a good leader, while junior Jessica Pearson was listed as the most solid player of the weekend by Flint.
Oxford’s scheduled match with New Albany tonight has been canceled. The next action for both varsity teams comes Thursday at Tupelo. (December 6, 2011, Page 7)
