Nutt says Ole Miss needs something different

BLOG: Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt appeared on the Tim Brando Show yesterday and amidst a variety of topics, briefly discussed what the Rebels will need in their next head coach.During his press conference on Monday, Nutt was asked what characteristics his successor will need to turn the program around and sort of brushed off the question. Tuesday, Nutt obliged and actually mentioned former Texas Tech head coach Mike Leach.

Here’s what he had to say:

“That’s a good question. I think the biggest thing is a guy that can recruit extremely well and to realize, look, you’re in the toughest conference and division in America and you’re going against the best of the best. The guy probably has to have some ties not only in Mississippi, but Louisiana, Alabama, Florida, Georgia. It starts there and then it goes into the other thing. You have to bring maybe something a little different. You’re not always going to have the best 11 on the field if you go against Alabama. We saw Alabama and LSU (play Nov. 5). To me, they’re a whole notch above right now so you need something a little different offensively. Maybe something a little creative that can help keep everything on the field. The one thing, when we had (Jeremiah) Masoli we kind of went a different way with him where I love what we did with Jevan (Snead), but you better have something a little different. I always think about what Mike Leach did at Texas Tech. He didn’t have the best players when compared to OU and Nebraska and those guys, but playing him in the Cotton Bowl and studying him, he did something a little bit different. I think probably along those lines maybe what Ole Miss will need.”

During today’s regularly scheduled Southeastern Conference teleconference, Nutt clarified that he did not endorse Leach, but used him as an example for the type of coach Ole Miss might need to hire.
