There’s never been any denying Nikki Byrd’s talent. The 6-foot-4 senior forward has consistently shown glimpses of her promise over the previous three seasons.
What hasn’t been consistent from the Brookhaven native, however, is her effort and production from game to game and even quarter to quarter.
For the better part of three seasons Byrd has undershot what head coach Renee Ladner considered to be her potential, often times not hustling on defense.
This season, as the team’s most experienced player, Byrd has been called upon to fulfill her potential and thus far she’s answered the call.
Through the team’s first six games Byrd is already doubling her averages from her junior campaign and heading into tonight’s home game against Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Byrd is sixth in the Southeastern Conference in scoring average (14.6 points per game) and leads the league in rebounding (12.0).
