WVHS knocks Aberdeen out of top spot

WATER VALLEY — Friday night’s 20-14 win over Aberdeen has been in the works for the last four seasons. Ever since Brad Embry arrived from Tupelo to lead the Blue Devils, the goals and achievements have been steadily building at a school and program that was desperately yearning for the success of teams of the past.

With former coaches Gary “Chick” Drewrey and Terry Allen, as well as several former players, in attendance at Bobby Clark Field, the Blue Devils captured their first Region 2-3A championship in school history and earned the coveted first place spot in the upcoming 3A playoffs.

A week after the Blue Devils (8-2 overall, 4-0 in Region 2-3A) accomplished one of Embry’s goals of making the playoffs, they ran over the Bulldogs (5-5, 3-1) late in order to win their most significant regular season game since Drewrey’s 2000 team locked up the previous region title. (October 24, 2011, Page 2B)
