West Point knocks off Chargers

BLOG — A second-half surge from the West Point Green Wave has left the Oxford Chargers on the brink of being eliminated from the Class 5A playoffs.West Point defeated the Chargers 31-21 Friday night at Bobby Holcomb Field to secure its spot in the upcoming playoffs. Oxford, which fell to 5-5 overall with the loss, now has to defeat Clarksdale by at least four points in the regular season finale in order to make the playoffs. OHS is now 3-3 in the region, while Clarksdale is 4-2.

OHS jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead on the Green Wave (6-4) in the first quarter only to see them rally with a 44-yard field goal and an 88-yard run by Delintez Lane. Oxford’s first touchdown came on a 1-yard run by Mont Dean, while the Chargers’ final score of the first half came on a 29-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Parker Adamson to Glenn Gordon. The catch put the Chargers up 14-10, their last lead of the game, with 3:22 left before the break.

West Point answered the Chargers by closing out the half with a 10-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Dequinten Spraggins and then outscoring OHS 14-7 in the second half to secure the victory.

Oxford’s final TD of the game came on an 82-yard catch-and-run by Gordon with 2:55 left in the contest. The Chargers recovered the ensuing onside kick, but West Point pushed them back the next four plays, holding them to negative 5 yards, and ending any chance of a last-second win for OHS. (October 29, 2011)
