Heading into this season Lafayette volleyball coach Rachel Wenzel was faced with a rather large problem: How could the Lady Commodores replace the production and leadership that left along with the graduated senior class?
She knew it would be no easy task, but senior middle blocker Ashley Smith went to Wenzel and requested that her coach trust her enough to allow her to play all the way around, rather than be substituted in the back row.
After some consideration, Wenzel obliged the request, and, looking back, there’s no doubt she made the right decision.
The transition from more of a specialized role to an all-around role wasn’t easy, but Smith was up to the task.
It’s because of that selfless attitude, putting the team’s goals before personal aspirations, that Smith is this year’s EAGLE Player of the Year. (October 26, 2011, Page 1B)
