The University of Mississippi Choral Department presents “The Music Of Joan Szymko” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Nutt Auditorium at UM. The UM Women’s Glee, under the direction of Debra Spurgeon, will present a program featuring several compositions by choral composer Szymko, including the premiere of a new work titled “Lux Beatissima.” Szymko is a Portland, Ore., based composer. She has set the texts of Wendell Berry, Julian of Norwich, William Blake, Langsdon Hughes and Mother Teresa, as well as traditional Latin texts of the choral canon. Her music runs the gamut from rhythmic African pieces, to lyrical, tuneful works. Guest appearances will be made by Sapphire from Olive Branch High School under the direction of Micheal Wegener, the Ole Miss Concert Singer’s and the Men’s Glee under the direction of Donald Trott. This performance represents the culmination of Szymko’s residency at UM. Szymko will conduct some of the works on the program and will discuss her compositional process. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students and are available at the UM Box Office, 915-7411.
