CORINTH — Paced by Esmeralda Rodriguez and Derek Hart, the Lafayette boys and girls cross country teams competed in the Corinth Invitational on Saturday. Rodriguez finished seventh in the large school division with a time of 16 minutes, 33 seconds on the 4K course. Peyton Hamann finished second for LHS and 30th overall with a 17:53. Taylor Selby finished with a 21:46, while Shantel Pope had a 21:49.
Hart finished 16th overall with a time of 18:26. Ivan Lopez followed him with a time of 18:53, good for 26th overall. Sam Faulkner was 37th with a 21:22. Jacob Roberts and Nate McChesney rounded out the top five finishers with a 21:34 and 22:00. The Commodores ran a 5K.
Nicolas Hollis led the junior high Commodores with a time of 12:33, good for 20th place in the 3K race. Jonathan Page ran a 14:03, Tucker Anderson ran a 14:47, Casey Wood ran a 15:26, while Grayson Mays ran a 15:53.
Julianna Mikell also competed in the 3K junior high race and finished with a 15:45.
“We’re kind of struggling right now overall. Esmeralda and Derek are running real well, but our girls are missing All-State runner Rachel Starnes, who is out maybe for the rest of the season with a stress fracture,” LHS coach Ben Mikell said. “Some of our boys just can’t find a rhythm. We do have three weeks to get ourselves going though so that’s good. Our goal at this point is to put together top five finishes for our boys’ and girls’ teams at the state meet. It will take a considerable effort on our part.”
LHS will return to action Saturday at Corinth for the Division 2-4A meet. (October 18, 2011, Page 10)
