Oxford HS swimmers swipe first at CHS Invite

CLEVELAND — Oxford’s girls and boys swim teams had a successful trip to the Delta as the two teams took home first place in the Cleveland High School Invite Saturday.

The combined score for both Oxford teams was 354 points, 80 points more than second-place finisher Starkville. Cleveland was third overall with a score of 243.

Oxford’s girls totaled 158 points, while the boys totaled 196 points.

Leading the Chargers
Andrew Mullen led the boys team with a first-place finish, good for nine points, in the 200 yard individual medley with a time of 2 minutes, 05.21 seconds. Mullen was also first in the 100 freestyle with a time of 50.33 seconds. Both earned the team 18 points.

Jack Cutler had a big day in the pool as he finished second in the 500 free (5:31.58) and second in the 200 free (2:03.01). Both earned the team 14 points in the overall standings. Other top five finishers included Taide Ding in the 100 back (second, 1:14.26) and 100 butterfly (1:02.80), Jacob Nichols in the 100 back (third, 1:14.84), Brian Clancy in the 200 IM (fourth, 2:18.17), Kevin Walker in the 50 free (fourth, 26.75) and 100 back (fifth, 1:19.64), Andrew Brown in the 500 free (fourth, 6:54.33), Dion Kevin in the 100 back (third, 1:05.15), Chase Gladden was second in the 100 free with a 55.20.

Marta Burwell finished first in the 100 back with a time of 1:06.44 to lead the individual results for the girls team. Burwell was also second in the 200 IM with a 2:25.34. Dora Chen was second in the 100 free (57.63) and third in the 200 free with a 2:06.36.

Cynthia Torma was third in the 50 free with a 27.12. Sarah Wilson was third in the 500 free with a 6:07.23 and fourth in the 100 back with a 1:25. Cynthia Torma was third in the 50 free (27.12), Hayley Murphy was fourth in the 500 free with a 6:16.57, Grace Orman was second in the 500 free with a 6:02.72 and third in the 100 butterfly (1:11.91), while Lizzie Leary was fifth in the 100 back with a 1:11.67.

Relay results
In relay races, the Oxford girls were first in the 200 free with a time of 1:47.52. The win garnered 18 points for the Chargers. The team was composed of Burwell, Orman, Chen and Tiffany Torma. In the 200 medley, Oxford’s team of Leary, Wilson, Murphy and Lulu Field finished second with a 2:13.53.

Oxford’s boys also finished first in the 200 free with a 1:39.19. Clancy, Kevin, Ding and Mullen made up that team. The boys were first in the 400 free with a 3:37.99. Mullen, Clancy, Cutler and Chase Gladden composed that team. Oxford’s boys were second in the 200 medley with a 1:51.66. Cutler, Thomas Murphy, Drake Armstrong and Nichols made up that team. Another Oxford team, composed of Sam McManus, Walker, Thomas Murphy and Ryan Copple, finished third in the 400 free with a 4:10.21, while the team of Guy Farmer, Nichols, Copple and McManus finished fourth in the 200 free with a time of 1:53.93. (October 3, 2011, Page 4B)
