Fans of the Oxford Chargers who are feeling a little nostalgic for the way football used to be played shouldn’t miss Friday night’s Homecoming game at Bobby Holcomb Field. On a night where old memories will be fresh, Oxford’s opponent, the Hernando Tigers, are a throwback team on offense if there ever was one.
Instead of employing a modern age spread attack that gains yards in bunches on the ground or through the air, Hernando coach Anthony Jenkins prefers beating teams using the seemingly long forgotten Wing T offense that was first introduced by Delaware coach Dave Nelson in 1950 and run by several college powerhouses through that decade and into the 1960s. Hernando was the only team that ran the Wing T last year and OHS coach Johnny Hill said the Tigers will be the only team that runs it this year. (October 13, 2011, Page 6)
