Chargers lose heartbreaker to Hernando

BLOG — Oxford’s inability to stop the Wing T offense of Hernando late cost them a chance to win Friday’s Region 1-5A game at Bobby Holcomb Field.The Chargers led its Homecoming game with Hernando 14-0 early in the second quarter and were ahead 21-7 with 5:24 left in the third quarter before the Tigers mounted their comeback that ultimately led to their 31-30 win in overtime.

Hernando scored the first touchdown of the overtime period on a 9-yard run by Ronnie Jones. Oxford answered with a 10-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Parker Adamson to Robert Liggins. Oxford went for the extra point to push the game into another overtime period but Hernando blocked the attempt to secure the come-from-behind win.

Oxford dropped to 4-4 overall with the loss and 2-2 in the region. Oxford will be back in action at Saltillo before returning home to finish out the season against Clarksdale and West Point. OHS has to win two of its three remaining games to be in a position to make the 5A playoffs. (October 15, 2011)
