BLOG — NEW HOPE — Mistakes made a season ago in a loss to the New Hope Trojans haunted the Oxford Chargers again this year. The Chargers lost their first Region 1-5A contest of the season with a 43-22 setback suffered at the hands of the Trojans on Friday Night. Oxford (3-3 overall, 1-1 in region play) struggled to move the ball in the first half, but was only down 9-7 at the half thanks to its final possession of the half that resulted in an 18-yard touchdown run by Stan Ivy.
Oxford’s offense got a big boost at the start of the third quarter when Mont Dean returned to the lineup after a six-quarter suspension. Another big boost, at least midway through the third quarter, was a blocked punt that was returned down to the New Hope 11-yard line by Ethan Holmes.
Two plays after Holmes’ return, Dean scored on a 2-yard run. After quarterback Parker Adamson added a 2-point conversion, the Chargers led 15-9. That would be the final time the Chargers led in the contest as New Hope reeled off four straight touchdowns the next 14 minutes of action to take a commanding 37-15 lead. New Hope routinely made big plays on Oxford’s defense, while a couple of key turnovers and sacks of Adamson thwarted drives on offense.
Oxford did score on a 57-yard touchdown run by Dean with just under three minutes left, but the Trojans recovered the Chargers’ onside kick after the score to run almost all of the remaining time off the clock. (October 1, 2011)
