BLOG — Two second half touchdowns and fast, physical defensive play all night proved to be the winning formula for the Water Valley Blue Devils Friday night against Aberdeen at Bobby Clark Field.
Water Valley defeated the Bulldogs 20-14 to capture the Region 2-3A crown. It was the first region title for the Blue Devils since 2000 when they were led by former coach Gary “Chick” Drewrey.
The Blue Devils trailed 8-0 early in Friday’s contest but they were able to whittle the lead down to one (8-7) just before the half when quarterback E.J. Bounds found Devin Fleming for a 20-yard touchdown pass.
The score remained through the third quarter and until Water Valley’s Jeoffrey Gordon broke a 32-yard run for a touchdown with 5:04 left in the game to put the Blue Devils ahead. Water Valley then went up two scores (20-8) 14 seconds later when Bounds scored on a 1-yard run following a fumble by Aberdeen on the ensuing kickoff that was recovered by Water Valley after Gordon’s score.
Aberdeen did score with 2:16 left in the contest, but the Bulldogs’ chance to win the game on a last possession was eliminated when Water Valley recovered the onsides kick by Aberdeen. WVHS then ran out the remaining clock with three snaps.
WVHS, now 8-2 on the year, will be back in action Friday at Mantachie. (October 22, 2011)
