Everything has gone according to plan for the No. 1 ranked Lafayette Commodores this season. LHS (10-0 overall) met one of its first goals of making the upcoming Class 4A playoffs two weeks ago while a second, and even more important goal, of gaining a third straight region title can be accomplished Thursday night.
The Region 2-4A title will be on the line when the Commodores, 4-0 in the region, host 9-1 North Pontotoc, a team that is 3-1 in the region, at William L. Buford Stadium. Thursday’s winner will be the No. 1 seed from the region and host a first-round playoff game. The Commodores would still host in the first round if they lost to North Pontotoc, but their 26-game winning streak would come to an end.
LHS coach Anthony Hart said the Vikings, who most recently defeated Lewisburg 38-14, have a good team led by senior running back Mitchell Cunningham, who has rushed for 1,613 yards and 24 touchdowns. (October 26, 2011, Page 1B)
