Plates to End Poverty
The UM Homeless Outreach will host The Plates to End Poverty, a silent auction to benefit ICM and More Than a Meal, from 6 to 9 p.m. Nov. 17 at Emileigh’s Kitchen on the Square. The auction will feature ceramic plates painted by notable individuals from the community. In addition to these plates, the auction will include additional pieces of art and items donated by students, community members, and local businesses. Homeless Outreach hopes that through this auction, it will help to raise awareness about homelessness in Oxford, as well as provide financial support for ICM and More Than a Meal. (October 31, 2011)
Fall Stew
First Wesleyan Church, 1740 Jefferson Ave., across from Bramlett Elementary School, will have a “Just in Time for Fall Stew” from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday. The stew will be available as take-out by the quart or sit-down at the church. Cornbread muffins, drink and dessert is included. Donations will be accepted. Live music will be provided by gospel bluegrass band, The Martins. (October 31, 2011)
Marriage Seminar
Oxford Church of Christ, 409 N. Lamar Blvd., will host a marriage seminar, “Marriage … Who has the time?,” this weekend. The non-threatening small group, interactive DVD-based event will be facilitated by John Kennedy, a Christian counselor from Memphis. The seminar begins at 6 p.m. Friday with dinner, followed by Session 1 from 7 to 8:30 and deals with time. Saturday’s schedule is from 9 to 11 a.m. and 12:15 to 2:15 p.m. Topics include talent, touch and treasure. Sunday’s 9 to 9:45 a.m. class will conclude the series. The seminar is open to individuals and couples of all ages. Registration is requested and free child care is provided with pre-registration. EDUganda Fundraiser
The Ole Miss student-led organization, EDUganda, will have a yard sale from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday and Saturday at 1758 Jefferson Ave. Donations are welcome to this yard sale which is being held to benefit EDUganda. For more information, call either 601-720-6928 or 601-832-4325. (October 31, 2011)
Square Toast for Scholarships
The Department of Nutrition and Hospitality Management will host the fourth annual Square Toast for Scholarships event from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday on the Square. Square Toast for Scholarships is a food and wine tasting event, with a silent auction, creating scholarships for students in the Ole Miss Hospitality Management Program. Tickets to the event are on sale now for $50 in advance and $60 the night of at the registration area, located on the south lawn of the Lafayette County Courthouse. Pancake Dinner Fundraiser
Tri Delta sorority will host its 20th annual pancake dinner from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Wednesday at IHOP on West Jackson Avenue. The community is invited to participate and the proceeds will benefit Oxford Medical Ministries and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The fraternity pancake eating contest will be held at 9. Duplicate Bridge Club
The Oxford Duplicate Bridge Club hosts a game each Tuesday evening at the Stonebridge Clubhouse in the Wellsgate subdivision. Play begins at 6:30 p.m. A partner can be provided for any player who needs one. For more information, call 234-1610. (October 31, 2011)
More Than a Meal

Free flu shots
The University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy is sponsoring free flu shots for low-income families without insurance at Interfaith Compassion Ministry from 9:30 to noon Tuesday. ICM is located at 904 N. Lamar Blvd. No appointments will be taken. The School of Pharmacy will also offer free flu shots at Tuesday night’s More than a Meal free dinner for the needy at the Stone Center from 5 to 7 p.m. No appointments will be taken. Flu shots will be given on a first-come, first-serve basis at both places until supplies last. (October 31, 2011)
Blood drives
United Blood Services, this area’s nonprofit community blood provider, will have a few blood drives in the coming days. Volunteer blood donors must be at least 16 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good health. Additional height/weight requirements apply to donors 22 and younger, and donors who are 16 must have signed permission from parents or guardian. From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Ole Miss Spirit Squad will host a blood drive in the Circle at the University of Mississippi. And finally, from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Thursday, the UBS Blood Mobile will be part at the Ole Miss Law School for another blood drive. (October 31, 2011)
