Water Valley earns sweep of Coffeeville

WATER VALLEY — Balance on offense and a smothering defense helped pace the Water Valley Blue Devils in two wins over Yalobusha County rival Coffeeville on Tuesday night at Bobby Clark Field.

The Blue Devils won the seventh-grade contest 6-0, while in the eighth-grade game Water Valley triumphed 27-0. Gabe Rogers scored the lone touchdown in the seventh-grade game on a 12-yard run. Four different Blue Devils scored touchdowns in the eighth-grade contest. Kirkland Walton rushed for a touchdown to put Water Valley on the board in the first half, while Markedrius Gooch scored the second touchdown on a 15-yard run.

Taurek Willis put the Blue Devils up three scores with a 10-yard run in the third quarter. J.P. Dennis then added a 2-point conversion. Following a fumble recovery by Cody Gilley at the Water Valley 20, Walton found Daniel Fleming for an 80-yard touchdown with 6:10 left in the fourth quarter.

Marshall Allred then added the extra point for the final points.

Both Water Valley teams will return to action at Charleston Tuesday. Action will begin at 5 p.m. (September 21, 2011, Page 6)
