Sibling of OM’s Poole family passes

Willodene Poole Robertson, 92, the last surviving sibling of Mississippi’s famous Poole family, passed away this week at her home near Gloster.

She grew up in the Homochitto Community and followed in the footsteps of her brothers Buster, Ray and Barney, who forged an athletics legend during their playing days at Ole Miss and then in the professional ranks. Services were held Wednesday at Brown Funeral Home Chapel in Gloster, with nephew Page Cothren and Rev. Bobby Thornhill officiating.

Following her graduation from Mississippi Southern College (now USM), she taught business and coached women’s basketball at Fernwood High School. Her teaching career spanned 30 years and included positions in Crosby, Centreville and Gloster. Her three brothers became members of the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame.

The Poole Drive on Ole Miss’ campus is named in honor of the family. (September 30, 2011, Page 7A)
