Art show interference sets troubling precedent
Oxford EAGLE News Editor Jonathan Scott expresses concern that Mayor Pat Patterson’s recent involvement in one particular artist’s show and its appropriateness to be displayed at The Powerhouse could be setting a precedent that seriously affects the growing local art community. Scott takes a closer look at the actions surrounding the “Scratch and Sniff” show, and suggests that the Arts Council ought to have more say than the mayor in what is displayed. “LES FEMMES ENCHANTEUR” – Southside Gallery
OXFORD TOWN – Oxford figurative artist Stan O’Dell’s latest exhibit, “Les Femmes Enchanteur,” opens Oct. 4 at Southside Gallery. The exhibit celebrates the beauty, grace and mystery of women. The Pantry
The community’s food bank, The Pantry, serves residents under age 65 from 9 to 11 a.m. on Wednesdays and those 65 and older from 9 to 11 a.m. on Thursdays every week. Shoppers need to bring Social Security card and picture I.D. Donations to The Pantry, located at 917 Molly Barr Road, may be dropped off on Tuesdays. Volunteers are needed to assist shoppers, arrange food drives and help stock shelves with food. Volunteers must be scheduled with The Pantry manager at 832-8001. (September 28, 2011)
COUNTY TRANSIT AVAILABLE
The Elderly and Disabled transportation service for Lafayette County residents is now available for persons 65+ years of age and for persons with a disability. Twenty-four hour notice is required to schedule a ride. RSVP is coordinating this transportation service for the county and rides are available Monday-Friday from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. For more information or to schedule a ride, call the RSVP office at 232-2377. Backpacks for Homeless
Collecting used (cleaned) backpacks for the homeless. These backpacks will be filled with canned fruit and vegetables, granola bars and toiletry items to be donated to ICM for distribution. Backpacks on wheels are preferred and donations of food and toiletry items are also needed. All items can be dropped off at Lammons Jewelry, 1126 North Lamar in Oxford. (September 28, 2011)
