OHS to host Invitational

Some of the state’s best swimmers will invade the county Saturday morning to take part in the annual Oxford Invitational meet. Warmups begin at 9:30 a.m., while the meet begins at 10:30 at the city pool located off Washington Avenue. Oxford coach Rebecca van Oostendorp said 341 swimmers from 17 schools will take place in the meet.

Oxford has approximately 37 swimmers who will compete in the day-long meet. Other top teams in the field include Tupelo, Starkville, Brandon and Cleveland. Van Oostendorp said DeSoto County schools have all added swimming programs and Saturday will be those teams first competition against schools outside of the county.

Oxford’s boys are coming a first-place overall finish last week at Brandon, while the Lady Chargers finished second.

Oxford is having to replace 10 seniors from last year and van Oostendorp said the team is young in several spots. (September 16, 2011, Page 6A)
