It wasn’t pretty, but the Oxford Chargers volleyball squad was able to conclude their season on Thursday with a 2-0 (26-24, 25-18) defeat of crosstown rival Lafayette at the LHS gym.
After Oxford jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first set, Lafayette chipped away at the lead and eventually tied the set at 17-17 and again at 19-19.
Following a spirited talk from OHS coach Tara Ross during a timeout with Lafayette leading 20-19, the Lady Chargers regained the lead and eventually won the set on a low-flying ace from Ivory Alexander that bounced off of a Lafayette defender and out of play.
In the second set, both squads traded points early on, but a kill from Sara Mims put the Lady Chargers ahead 8-7 and the lead never changed hands again. (September 30, 2011, Page 7A)
