Lafayette’s seventh- and eighth-grade football teams were unable to come away with wins against Batesville on Thursday at William L. Buford Stadium.
The seventh-grade lost 22-20, while the eighth graders lost 28-6 in the nightcap. In the seventh-grade game, Atarius Owens led Lafayette (1-3 overall) with three touchdowns in the contest. His first score came on a 70-yard run, while his second score covered 60 yards.
Both came in the second quarter. Cory Williams added a 2-point run following the second score to pull Lafayette to within two points (16-14) at the half. Owens’ 32-yard run late in the third quarter put Lafayette ahead, 20-16, before Batesville scored with five minutes left. Lafayette drove down to the 6-yard line on its final drive, but was unable to score. LMS coach Glenn Williams credited the play of Owens in the loss. In the eighthgrade game, Tyrell Price scored Lafayette’s lone TD on a 28-yard run in the third quarter.
Williams said his team, which is now 3-1, played hard all night even after getting down 14-0 at the start of the contest.
Both Lafayette teams will be back in action Tuesday at home against Grenada at 5 p.m. (September 16, 2011, Page 7A)
