SPORTS BLOG: SHANNON — The Lafayette Commodores showed why they are the top team in Mississippi once again Friday night with a 56-14 win over Shannon.
LHS QB Jeremy Liggins showed why he is one of the top college recruits in the state as well, this time though, it was with one of the nation’s top college coaches in LSU’s Les Miles roaming the sidelines.
Liggins sparked a 28-point opening quarter with a 55-yard TD throw to Colby Terrell on the ‘Dores third play of the game and connected with Debrico Burgess on a 37-yard score on the following possession to give LHS (5-0 overall) the quick start that it had been looking for all season.
The fast start that opened the ballgame continued in the second half, as Liggins scored on touchdown runs of 1, 16 and 7 yards on the ‘Dores first three possessions to open the third quarter
LHS running back Demarkous Dennis also had a big night, rushing for 241 yards on 16 carries, while scoring on runs of 67 and 65 yards.
Jamel Dennis scored on a fumble recovery in the end zone after a high snap went over Red Raiders’ quarterback Devan Gilleylen’s head.
