The Lafayette Middle School football teams earned a sweep of Grenada on the road Tuesday night. The seventh-grade Commodores defeated the Chargers 24-6 in the first game of the doubleheader, while the eighth graders remained undefeated on the year with a 14-6 win. In the seventh-grade contest, Atarius Owens scored on runs that covered 58 and 35 yards. His first run came in the first quarter, while his last TD came with 6:08 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Owens also added the 2-point run following his second score. Lafayette (1-2) also got a touchdown from Tyler Williams on a 22-yard run with just 1:21 left in the first half. Owens added the 2-point run, while D.Q. Thomas also had a 2-point run. Lafayette coach Glenn Williams credited the play of his wideouts, Zack Pugh and John Taylor, for their blocking. In the eighth-grade game, Zeke Liggins got the Commodores (3-0) on the scoreboard first with an 18-yard run at the 1:41 mark of the second quarter.
Grenada was able to tie the contest with a 45-yard pass. Lafayette then went ahead for good by controlling the ball the entire third quarter and scoring on a 22-yard run by Liggins with 6:50 left in the fourth. Rashaun Rockette then found Quinn Jones for the 2-point play. Williams said that wide receivers Alan Mathis and Mack Bishop both blocked well.
Both teams will return to action Sept. 15 at home against South Panola. Action begins at 5 p.m. (September 7, 2011, Page 6)
