BLOG: Lafayette’s 22nd consecutive win tonight came as no surprise.
Not underestimating their opponent, the Commodores (6-0 overall) rolled to a 48-7 victory over Pontotoc at William L. Buford Stadium.
Lafayette quarterback Jeremy Liggins got the scoring started with a 20-yard draw up the middle. Liggins later completed a screen pass to running back Demarkous Dennis for a 71-yard score, had a 1-yard QB dive for a score and completed a 54-yard pass to DeBrico Burgess for Lafayette’s final touchdown on the night early in the third quarter.
Burgess got it done on both sides of the ball, scoring Lafayette’s second touchdown courtesy of a 60-yard scoop-and-score when Pontotoc botched an option pitch.
Dennis also had a second touchdown on a 14-yard run, while his brother, Jamel Dennis, had a 1-yard touchdown to put Lafayette ahead 42-0.
Next up for Lafayette is a meeting with Itawamba-AHS next Friday.
RECRUITING TIDBIT: Liggins told me he expects to stay in town tomorrow and take in the Georgia-Ole Miss game. The Rebels and Bulldogs are set to meet at 11:21 a.m. (September 23, 2011)
