Volunteer Oxford, the community’s new volunteer center, needs area residents to volunteer on a day of service and remembrance on Sunday, Sept. 11. Various service site activities will focus on hunger and remember those who lost their lives on 9/11.
Local nonprofits benefiting from this day will be community resources that address hunger: The Pantry, More Than a Meal, Love Packs and the Oxford Community Garden. Volunteers will also honor the victims and heroes of 9/11 by working alongside local heroes.
Service site projects include community-wide food drives, gardening and landscaping projects, and helping organize and prepare food. Volunteers of all ages are encouraged to participate.
The 9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance will kick off at 12:30 p.m. Sept. 11 at the Oxford Activity Center. Volunteers will work on various service projects that afternoon with a 5 p.m. community supper at Lamar Park. Volunteers will receive a complimentary dinner on the grounds with the community invited to participate in the 9/11 service community event. The community will observe a moment of silence and also recognize and honor police, firefighters, and military servicemen and women.
