If the pressure surrounding the start of the Ole Miss football team this year was wearing on athletics director Pete Boone, he didn’t show it during his guest speaking engagement at the Rotary Club of Oxford on Tuesday afternoon. Boone was the featured speaker at the weekly lunch meeting held at the Oxford-University Club and his presentation to the members was well organized, informative and accomplished in a very positive manner.
Boone started his talk with a few jokes about his current status with Ole Miss, asking the crowd what the over-under of him showing up to give the talk was. He also referenced an upcoming meeting he has scheduled with the Jackson Touchdown Club and joked that their organizers were sending hourly e-mails asking if he was still planning to attend.
Much of Boone’s talk revolved around the current landscape of college athletics, compliance issues that schools are having to tackle so they don’t draw the ire of the NCAA as well as expansion and the addition of Texas A&M to the Southeastern Conference as the 13th member, which became official on Sunday.
