SPORTS BLOG: BRUCE — The Water Valley Blue Devils responded to their first loss of the season last week by defeating the Bruce Trojans 20-19 on Friday night at Trojan Field.
Blue Devils’ quarterback E.J. Bounds connected with wide receiver Cole Camp for an 84-yard game winning TD with a little over four minutes to go in the game to seal the win for Water Valley (3-1 overall).
The big play came less than a minute after the Trojans (3-1) took the lead at 19-14 off a 1-yard run from Donta Armstrong with 5:01 left to play.
Camp recovered a C.J. Jackson fumble in the end zone in the third quarter to make the score 14-13. On the play, Jackson took the handoff from Bounds up the middle and ran eight yards before fumbling the ball at the Trojans’ 28-yard line. The ball was kicked all the way down field by both sides before Camp fell on it for the score.
Bruce led 13-7 at halftime off a 43-yard throw and catch from Davis Brown to Rashad Turner in the first quarter and a 26-yard run by Zay Armstrong halfway through the second quarter.
Bounds put the first points of the night on the scoreboard for the Blue Devils, scoring on a 1-yard run with 9:21 to play in the first half to tie the game at 7-7.
