Oxford Middle School’s Fall Football Fest turned out to be a positive for both the seventh and eighth graders on the field Saturday. Five other schools joined Oxford in the tournament held at Ole Miss’ Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.
The games were used to help teams work on fundamentals and fine tune offensive and defensive systems. Water Valley, Charleston, Center Hill, Grenada and Pontotoc played in the inaugural event.
Oxford’s seventh-grade team defeated Water Valley in its first action and then took on Center Hill in the second contest. Water Valley’s eighth-graders lost 20-6 to Oxford. In two games with Grenada, Water Valley won the eighth-grade contest 22-6, while Grenada won the seventh-grade contest 14-6.
In the Oxford-Water Valley seventh-grade game, each team played 10 minutes on offense and 10 minutes on defense with a running clock. Oxford coach Mike Hardwick thought his team did well with some of the new installments. (August 29, 2011, Page 2B)
