Oxford’s 14-and-Under State Championship tennis team, sponsored by the Oxford Park Commission and Oxford Community Tennis Association, competed in the Southern Sectionals Tennis Tournament this past weekend in Mobile, Ala.
Oxford played against teams from Georgia, Tennessee, South Carolina and Arkansas and the results were favorable, according to those involved with the tournament. Members of the team included McClellan Davis, Emily Morgan, Swayze Elliott, Abby Pate, Liam Cooper, Gus Morgan, Nathan Hollis, Max Mauney and Sam Peeler. The team was coached by Oxford High’s Louis Nash.
“Oxford continues to have a strong prescen at the state and regional level with youth tennis. Oxford’s youth program focuses on strong effort and good attitude,” Nash said. “To be competitive in tennis at this level takes commitment from the players, parents and coaches. Oxford is fortunate to have such strong community support for the sport of tennis.”
David Heckel, the OCTA’s Vice President, was proud of the team’s accomplishments during the summer and in the most recent action down in Mobile.
“The Oxford Tennis community is very proud of these young people. Tennis is a sport which enables a young person to develop his or her game in a way unlike many other sports, which limit you by size, speed or the number of kids desiring to participate. We see these young people practicing and playing at Avent and John Leslie every day,” Heckel said. “The long standing tennis program success at Oxford High School under Louis Nash and the more recent success in the upcoming Lafayette High School tennis program under Debbie Swindoll wouldn’t be possible without a highly successful youth program to develop these young people.
Tennis is a sport for all ages. With the proper facilities approved, there is no reason why these young people and the generations behind them won’t hae continued success. Great job kids.” (August 26, 2011, Page 6A)
