Lafayette 9th grade gets physical in win

Lafayette ninth-grade football coach Nacoma James wants his Commodores to play fast and physical every time they hit the field this season. Fortunately for James, and the other members of the ninth-grade coaching staff, his group was able to do both in a 28-6 win over crosstown-rival Oxford on Monday night at Bobby Holcomb Field.

Led by the rushing duo of Eli and John Murphree, the Commodores totaled 268 yards on the ground en route to the win, while the defense held the Chargers in check and at bay most of the night.

Eli Murphree, the team’s quarterback, totaled 75 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries as he ran the triple option to near perfection, while brother John Murphree topped all Lafayette rushers with 104 yards and a score. (August 30, 2011, Page 8)
