SPORTS BLOG: TUPELO — The Lafayette Commodores’ football team kicked off the season in dominating fashion Friday night with a 40-11 win over the Tupelo Golden Wave in Tupelo.
Offensive stars Demarkous Dennis and Jeremy Liggins each had their share of touches for LHS, but it was D.K. Buford’s 57-yard touchdown run with about 4 minutes to go in the first quarter that kick-started the team.
Buford’s score put the ‘Dores ahead 7-3 and was the first of six-consecutive drives ending in a TD for the LHS offense.
Four different Commodores scored on the evening with Buford and Jamel Dennis each scoring twice. Demarkous Dennis rushed for over 100 yards and a score, and Liggins threw a TD pass to Brandon Mack.
The LHS defense held highly-touted Golden Wave running back Ashton Shumpert in check all night, limiting the junior to just 21 yards on 10 carries.
