Commodores back on road to tangle with Greenwood

A week after dismantling Class 6A Tupelo in the season opener, the No. 2 Lafayette Commodores will travel to play the Greenwood Bulldogs on Friday night.

LHS (1-0 overall) and GHS (0-1) were familiar foes prior to the re-classification of schools in 2009. The Bulldogs, led by new coach Clinton Gatewood, went 10-3 last season and advanced to the second round of the Class 4A playoffs before losing to Shannon.

Greenwood fell to Leflore County 26-22 in its season opener after giving up two touchdowns in the final three minutes. The Bulldogs still had an opportunity to pull out the win, but a receiver dropped a pass in the end zone with 21 seconds remaining in the contest.

Despite the loss, LHS coach Anthony Hart said the Bulldogs are a team that has a lot of ability. (August 25, 2011, Page 6)
