Judge seals response to Scruggs’ motion
A federal judge issued an order Tuesday granting a motion filed by the government to seal its response to a motion filed by Richard “Dickie” Scruggs who is seeking to have his conviction and sentence overturned in the judicial bribery case known in the legal world as Scruggs II. Oxford, Lafayette both win in middle school clash
The crosstown rivalry between those in the Lafayette and Oxford School Districts knows no bounds and does not discriminate by age group.
Tuesday’s action on the gridiron proved that when the Oxford seventh graders claimed a 20-8 victory, while the Lafayette eighth-grade squad was able to hold on for a big 20-16 win. (August 31, 2011, Page 6A)
Brunetti continues to improve
A little over a week after being named the starting quarterback for the BYU opener, Ole Miss sophomore Barry Brunetti had his best practice of the summer. Head coach Houston Nutt and offensive coordinator David Lee both praised the work turned in by Brunetti on Tuesday.
The biggest reason for the swift improvement compared to last week when Brunetti struggled was comfort, while consistency was another important intangible mentioned by both coaches. (August 31, 2011, Page 6A)
Lady Chargers fall to Lake Cormorant
A two-set lead over Lake Cormorant didn’t hold for the Oxford Lady Chargers on Tuesday as they fell to the Lady Gators 3-2 (25-13, 25-23, 23-25, 11-25, 7-15). Oxford will return to action Thursday at Center Hill. (August 31, 2011, Page 7A)
Wednesday’s obituaries
- Kermie Ann Faust Tollison Sloan — died Saturday, Aug. 20, 2011. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Oxford. Burial will follow at the columbarium at St. Peter’s following the service.
City tweaks grant guidelines
