Dean Faulkner Wells dies at 75
Dean Faulkner Wells, 75, a writer and editor, died Wednesday afternoon at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi in Oxford surrounded by family and close friends. She had been placed on life support after suffering a stroke.
The niece of Nobel-prize winning author William Faulkner, Wells was the last surviving member of the children of William Faulkner and his siblings.

Absentee Ballots
Absentee ballots for the Aug. 2 primary election are now available in the Lafayette County Circuit Clerk’s office. Those eligible to vote absentee can come by the office between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and pick up an absentee ballot. The office will be open from 8 a.m. to noon this Saturday. This Saturday will be the last day to walk into the clerk’s office and vote absentee.
Voters are reminded that because this is a partisan primary election, they must cast either a Republican ballot or a Democratic ballot. Voters should make sure they pick up the absentee ballot that has the candidates they want to support before they cast the ballot. For more information, call 234-4951. (July 27, 2011)
LOFT grant applications
Lafayette Oxford Foundation for Tomorrow, or LOFT, is accepting grant applications through Friday. To apply, organizations must be a nonprofit tax-exempt agency with 501c3 status located in Oxford or Lafayette County. Master Gardener Classes
Applications for Master Gardener training are available by calling the Lafayette County Extension Service at 234-4451. An orientation meeting is scheduled for Sept. 8 and classes begin Oct. 11. The class will meet twice a week through Nov. 15. The training course will include subjects such as lawn care, ornamentals, vegetables, basic botany and others. It will also include a field trip on tree identification. Fee for the class is $85 and the deadline for applications is Sept. 8. (July 27, 2011)
Hunter Education Classes
Two hunter education classes have been set for the 2012 season. The first class will be held Aug. 20 at the Harmontown Civic Center on Highway 310. The second class will be held Sept. 10 at the Oxford National Guard Armory. Both classes will be held from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. For more information on either class, call 662-840-5172. All persons born on or after Jan. 1, 1972, that have reached the age of 12, must complete the hunter education course before they can hunt or obtain a license. (July 27, 2011)

Back 2 School Bash
His Harvest Ministries will host the second annual Back 2 School Bash at 6 p.m. Aug. 3. His Harvest Ministries is located at 3 CR 104. Blessing of the Backpacks
St. Peter’s Episcopal Church will host a Blessing of the Backpacks at the 9 a.m. service Sunday. All students are invited to bring their backpacks and receive a blessing. The church is collecting materials for students in Honduras to be taken down with the medical mission in February. Items requested include pencils, individual pencil sharpeners, writing tablets, crayons and coloring books in Spanish. (July 27, 2011)

A candidate speaking event will begin at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Fishin’ Hole, located 14 miles east of Oxford on Highway 6. Sponsored by the Oxford Park Commission and Yoknapatawpha Arts Council, Movies in the Park host a free screening of a movie and a live concert at Avent Park.
