An experienced group of skill players from Lafayette showed this weekend at the O-Zone Classic why the Commodores are expected to win a second straight Class 4A state title.
Led by quarterback Jeremy Liggins, Lafayette won the Group A title in the second annual 7-on-7 tournament held at FNC Park.
LHS went 4-1 on Friday night, the first night of competition in the two-day event, to earn the No. 1 seed heading into Saturday’s double-elimination tournament. The Commodores ended up coming back through the loser’s bracket to capture the Group A title when they defeated Saltillo 27-22. Wide receiver Brico Burgess capped the successful weekend, and the win, by catching a long touchdown pass from Liggins on a slant-and-go route that he called in the huddle just before the Commodores’ final offensive possession.
For LHS assistant coach Dusty Finley, who coordinated the offense during the tournament, the effort and execution pleased him the most during the eight games LHS played. (July 11, 2011, Page 6)
