Oxford adults capture tennis title

An 4.0 tennis team from Oxford won the United States Tennis Association Adult League Championship Sunday in Biloxi. Pamela Grafton’s Jackson team defeated Jackson 3-2 to capture the title and did not drop a match on the way to the championship. 

Oxford started the tournament on Thursday with a 3-2 win over a team from Jackson. A second win came over a Biloxi based team on Friday, while the team beat Columbus 5-0 and Brookhaven to advance into the state title. Earning wins for Oxford were from the doubles team of Beth Lea Sanders and Meta Ginn, who won their match 6-1, 6-0.

Whitney Kent won her singles match in three sets, while Mignon Hodges and Sarah Rowlett won their doubles match in three sets as well. The victory in the title match advances Grafton’s team to Mobile, Ala., to play in the sectional championships the first week in August. Members of the team include Lilly Brown, Laurel Tait, Stephanie Stallings, Caitlin McLarty, Karen Yelverton, Brigham McGraw, Beth Chandler, Jamie Wicker, Cecilia Gold and Macon Dukes. (June 13, 2011, Page 7)
