The appeal to get closer to his family and rejoin a former friend and mentor in the process is why Richy Harrelson is headed back to Northeast Mississippi Community College later this summer.
The former Ole Miss Rebel and head baseball coach at Lafayette High is returning to his college coaching roots in Booneville on Aug. 1 to become an assistant again under his former boss, Kent Ferris, at NECC.
Harrelson has spent the past three seasons at Southern Miss as a volunteer coach who was in charge of all the baseball camps and private lessons that were held on campus as well as worked with the USM hitters and outfielders during the season and coached first base during the games.
Harrelson was part of a staff that helped lead the Golden Eagles to the NCAA Regionals three straight seasons, including a magical run in 2009 that resulted in the team reaching the College World Series. That particular experience was very fulfilling to Harrelson, but he feels like a move back to even more comfortable surroundings is the best thing for his family. (June 24, 2011, Page 6A)
